Abies lasiocarpa

Subalpine Fir

Family: Pinaceae
Type: Trees
Location: Subalpine
Flower Color: Inconspicuous
Fall Color: Green
Time of Interest: Year Round
Description:

Once we get into the subalpine, this is the dominant Fir, often growing with Spruce and Aspen. It is one of the main trees you'll find at Purgatory. It shares many similarities with A. concolor, however the needles are shorter. The differ from Spruce in that the needles curl around the stem to reach toward light, while Spruce needles remain pointed in the direction in which they leave the stem.
