A plethora of ecosystems
The region covered by this website centers around Durango, Colorado and extends roughly 100 miles in any direction. While we may include some plants that live in fringe areas such as McElmo canyon, we will not include many that are not found naturally close to Durango. The area in question has an impressive variation in elevation as well as temperature. A plethora of ecosystems awaits us, from low dry desert to high alpine ridges to lush river valleys and just about everything between.
It's good to double-check
While we do our best to note within which ecosystem a plant is predominantly found, we recognize that a single plant may exist across several different ecosystems. It is always a good idea to double-check any identification you make and when possible we try to link to other websites when ID is in question. An excellent local resource is Al Schneider's Southwest Colorado Wildflowers.
Our goal is to spread awareness about the value of using native plants in water wise landscaping, as well as celebrate the beauty of these plants that often go unnoticed.
