Crataegus erythropoda

Hawthorn

Family: Rosaceae
Type: Shrubs, Trees
Location: Lower-Foothills, Upper-Foothills
Flower Color: White
Fall Color: Yellow, Orange
Time of Interest: April, May
Description:

Hawthorn can be found in abundance in some areas locally, such as along the Animas river in Durango, and in the low meadows in the Dry Fork of Lightner Creek area. Attractive flowers give way to red fruits that darken to almost black at maturity. There are 2 speices common in our area, we have settled on this identification because of the (if only slightly) lobed leaves pictured. The other species is C. rivularis. If you know something we don't about this identification, (very possible!) let us know.
