Description:

The tallest Penstemon in the area, P. barbatus (meaning "beard") can be found on rocky hillsides and disturbed areas around Durango. Growing as tall as 4', it puts out bright red tubular flowers in mid summer. You can avoid conusion with Ipomopsis by knowing that Ipomopsis flowers are salverform and star shaped at the end while P. barbatus, like all Penstemon, have bilabiate flowers (two lips)
